Description:

“Bloody” Mary is not your typical vampire. He can withstand sunlight, holds a reflection in mirrors, refuses to drink blood—and wants 17-year-old student and priest Maria to kill him. But to Mary’s dismay, Maria doesn’t know how to kill vampires. Desperate to die, Mary agrees to become Maria’s bodyguard until Maria can find a way to kill him at last.

The art for this series really drew me in (and the fact it was about vampires). The story started out a little slow, as we are introduced to the world of Bloody(Mary) and Maria. There is a lot going on in this world, so it took a while to a hang of what was going on, and every time you thought you understood, a secret was revealed that always threw me for a loop. It was definitely a well-crafted series.

One problem I did have with the series was that it didn’t feel as romantic as what seemed to be hinted (mainly by the covers). While it is touched on near the end, I felt the author could have elaborated more and hinted more about what was going on through their heads about each other.

All the characters that were introduced were well established and their reasoning and background made sense. I hated a few of them, but at least their drive made sense to me. My favorite character was Bloody because lets be honest, he’s so adorable!

All in all, I definitely enjoyed this series, especially as a fan of vampire stories. I would recommend it to anyone who loves the vampire or BL genre. It is a completed series so you don’t need to wait for any more to come out and the author ended it in a good spot and it felt complete. Be sure to check it out and let me know what you think!

Also, did I mention I like vampires?

Review of Black Butler: Book of the Atlantic

black_butler_book_of_the_atlantic

Title: Book of the Atlantic

Series: Black Butler

English Producing Company: Funimation

Funimation/Amazon

Review by: Dani Hoots

Rating: 5/5

Back cover:

Ciel Phantomhive and his demonic butler, Sebastian, are back—but their next case has them treading some rough waters! Aboard the luxury liner Campania, the two investigate an illegal human experiment that involves resurrecting the dead. But the closer they get to the truth, closer they are to their own deaths! Will this be their final case, or will one hell of a butler keep them afloat?

Review:

I got to see this in theater and ordered it ASAP when Funimation finally released it on DVD. In the manga, this is one of my favorite arcs as Elizabeth finally gets her debut of being a badass. I do love how the Black Butler franchise is making movies of Black Butler arcs and I hope they do the German arc and the School arc.

One of my other favorite parts of this movie is the Undertaker. I am behind in the manga (I should go catch up right now…) and want to know what plan the Undertaker has, if he even has a plan.

The art in this movie is as beautiful as always and the voice actors did a great job with their roles. Nothing seemed off putting to me, as I have seen in some other anime, and the movie seemed to follow the manga closely from what I remember. It is definitely a movie all Black Butler fans should watch, and if you haven’t watched Black Butler, then watch the first season through the Curry arc, then the Book of Circus, then Book of Murder, then this movie. Ignore the second half of the first season and season two… For your own sake.

Anime Review ~ Karneval

Karneval

(watched dubbed in English)

*Note: I just started the manga after watching the anime*

Nai–a young man who travels in search of another by the name of Karoku, a lone bracelet his only lead. Gareki–a willful young man who earns his daily bread by thieving and picking pockets. Thrown together at an eerie mansion, where they are entrapped and framed, Nai and Gareki are soon hunted down as criminals by national security forces. As they are driven into a corner, before them appears the most powerful defense agency in the country, “Circus”–!!

This story is full of mystery and adventure, keeping you on the edge of your seat, binge watching it all in one seating (as I did…). The art is beautiful, the characters engaging and interesting, and the story moves along at a good pace. It is definitely a show I would be willing to watch again.

My favorite character was Yogi, as he is one of the head people in Circus, yet he is just a nice guy wanting to get through the world. Although when his allergy patch comes off, he does seem like a different person…

The world that Karneval takes place in is quite believable, quite spectacular, and between this and Sailor Moon, it makes me want to join the Circus even more. I just wished we got to see more performances that they do in the Circus for each town, but I presume the manga will show a little more.

The anime has definitely been cut short, only 13 episodes, but the manga is being released in the United States so don’t fear! We shall know what happens next, at least I hope! It doesn’t leave off on a complete cliff hanger, but there are definitely some questions left unanswered.

I give this anime a 5/5 as the art is wonderful, it contains everything I want (circus theme, action, mystery, and a believable world). So if you are like me and love animes with circus themes, definitely check this one out! I will be reviewing the manga later, so don’t worry!

Manga Review: Wanted

Wanted by Matsuri Hino

A short little manga series that had a lot of potential but unfortunately got shelved due to her Vampire Knight series going on for 19 volumes (but that is amazing as well!).

The story starts out about a girl who lost her love to a pirate and goes on to find the pirate who kidnapped her love. She finds out that the pirate captain is actually her love and she stays on the ship to be with him. They also run into problems with the navy, of course, and they have to stay out of trouble.

The art, as always, is tremendously beautiful. I love Matsuri Hino’s art in all of her work, and this story does not disappoint. I really like the pictures in between chapters as she puts in so detail to what she puts in each drawing. Not only is the drawing beautiful, but the colors are great as well. For example:

The characters are pretty interesting, I just wished that Luce wouldn’t treat Arto like a little girl, but it is understandable as she is on a boat with a bunch of pirates. As I said, it ends short and there should be more to the story. If you love pirates though, this is a great short and will make you smile.

Also, there is a short story at the end called Spring Cherry Blossoms that is also cute and heartwarming. If you love Vampire Knight, definitely check this out.

I give this manga a 5/5 as it wasn’t the story’s fault that it got cancelled or not finished as she had prior obligations. It’s beautiful, cute, and sweet and I never wanted to put the manga down.

Manga Review: Soul Eater

Soul Eater by Atsushi Ōkubo

Hi all!

I finally finished this manga (all 25 books!) It was a lot to read, especially since I read most of it this summer (I think I had five done before that).

Soul Eater follows young kids as they are learning to be Meisters and Death Weapons to keep the world safe under the Shinigami. They go to school at DWMA where they learn from crazy teachers, such as Dr. Franken Stein. But when all seems fine, the Kishin is resurrected by the witch Medusa and they must put a stop to the madness that is spreading.

Anyway, I loved this manga! Ōkubo did a great job tying the plot together throughout the ten years that this manga went on. Although some people think that there are different arcs, really it is one large arc with many smaller arcs. That is definitely hard to do on such a long time frame, by Ōkubo nailed it!

As for the characters, I think they are all very well rounded, some of them developing throughout the manga because of the events unfolding and others not so much as developing, but are minor characters who have already become the person they are meant to be (if that makes sense). I will go into more detail below, but it will be under the *spoilers* section.

The art is good, it isn’t my type of art, but it is consistent and very well done. It definitely goes with the theme throughout the manga, so the style didn’t bother me that much even though it wasn’t something I would normally look for. That is just a personal preference, so it’s nothing I would mark the series down for.

All in all, I loved this manga and give it five stars—a must read for anyone who enjoys dark fantasy manga. But have to warn, there are a lot of Fan Service moments…

And now, for the spoiler section.

*SPOILERS*

So I had to add my thoughts of the end. First off, I want the whole ‘madness of boobs’ explained. Seriously, that needs to be figured out. It’s funny, but I need to know…

As for character arcs, everything that had to do with shinigami was fantastic. I wanted to punch Excalibur at the end, but it was fantastic. Having the Kishin be Kid’s brother really brought things to a close, and I felt teary-eyed when Death died.

Maka and Soul had an awesome development throughout, getting through the fears and what they have faced in the past, and what they face in the present. They became strong together and they learned to fight like two badass people. I really liked when Maka fought with her father, because the connection of family, while facing Crona, bringing that development within Crona out in the open.

As for Black Star, at first I really didn’t like him, but after the mini arc of him wanting to become stronger, I really started to appreciate the character. He grew up and learned what it meant to be truly a warrior.

And last but not least, I really really enjoyed Stein’s progress throughout the story. He was the one most susceptible to the madness at DWMA and even though he was losing himself to the madness, his friends always stayed by his side. They never left him, even when he was young and mad, wanting to dissect everything. His friends were true, and I think that was the greatest strength that Stein had. And in the end, he was able to control his madness and use it to his advantage. Just in time too, because now he has to give up cigarettes for his new little monster.

So let me know if you read it, want to read it, or have any other comments.

Thanks!

Manga Review: Blood Alone

Blood Alone

Blood_alone_cover_1

Written by: Masayuki Takano

Published by: MediaWorks(former), Kodansha(current)

Well, here is my first review of a manga series! Normally I will only review a manga that is finished or review an arc of a storyline, but since this manga only comes out every once in a blue moon, I am going to go ahead and review it.

Blood Alone is an ongoing manga published in Japan about Kuroe Kurose, a private detective and author, and Misaki Minato, a young vampire girl, and follows different investigations that Kuroe receives. It can be very dark in some scenes, but in others be very cute and sweet. It is well rounded and a rather serious manga compared to others. Misaki loves Kuroe, but she is forever trapped in an adolescent’s body. Kuroe cares for Misaki a lot and has given up vampire hunting in order to protect her. The vampire inside of Misaki is slowly taking over and taking away her memories of being human. it is a slow change and Kuroe hopes to help keep her humanity in tact, or he might lose her for good. There are a couple of arcs that the series covers, in English at least, and all of them are quite enjoyable and suspenseful. All the characters are well rounded and I love Higure, an elder vampire who looks like a little boy. He is wise and dark but on the outside he just appears to be a boy. I find those to always be the scariest vampires, ones that look like an innocent child but are quite the contrary.

I really enjoyed the published books so far (1-6), but am very upset that 7-10 have not been released in the United States. I ordered 7 in Japanese, hoping the kanji would have kana next to it because then at least I can translate it, but unfortunately it doesn’t. So far I have translated a page. Either I need to be patient and wait for them to publish in English, or further my understanding of Japanese. I’m not quite sure which one will come first.

All in all, this series is worth buying, even though not all are available in the United States. I have read and reread the 6 books so far and hope that they decide to publish more in English. If you are looking for anything vampire, series, cute, yet suspenseful, this is a perfect series to pick up.

Hope you enjoyed my first review, let me know what other manga series you think I should check out!

Confession #8: Sailor Moon

I confess, I was part of the Sailor Moon craze in the 90s, who that loved anime wasn’t?! I knew everything about the Sailor Scouts, had every manga and the entire series on VHS (I feel old)…. Each having only a couple of episodes on them so I had a whole bookcase full of Sailor Moon VHS.

I hope the release them on DVD for the US again, it is ridiculous trying to find them at affordable price. I found them on ebay for sale, but not quite sure if its the official licensing…

Anyway, my favorite character has always been Sailor Uranus. She is awesome and is the reason I cut my hair so short and wear boots :).

When I reread the manga last summer, I fell in love with Sailor Mars. I didn’t originally like her but since it  had been so long since I read them, I didn’t realize how much different she was in the manga than the anime. She’s a lot more snobby in the anime but in the manga you see a different side of her. I like it a lot.

And we can’t forget Tuxedo Mask! Such a hunk, I had a crush on him. Crazy enough, I accidentally (I swear it was an accident) bought my husband Darien’s outfit in the anime. A green jacket, jeans, black shirt. I was sitting the store thinking oh that looks really good! And familiar…… hmmmm….. It wasn’t until three days later did I realize why it looked familiar!

So who is ready for the remake this summer?! I cannot wait!!! They are supposed to follow the manga closer and I really hope they include the short stories as well! It is going to be great, I’m counting the days!!!

In that name of the moon, you shall follow my blog!
